Meet The Team

Tim has over 30 years’ of major hazard industry experience and set up SSCL having taken early retirement from Dana Petroleum plc in 2013.

At Dana Petroleum Tim had been the Group HSSE Director which included a year’s secondment to Dana’s owners, the Korea National Oil Corporation in Seoul. While there Tim provided specialist advice on HSE, Process Safety and HSE Leadership, Strategy and Best Practice.

Previously Tim was at Wood Group, where he was the HSEQ Director for the North Sea Engineering Ltd business and prior to that he was HSSEQ Director at Maersk Oil UK, and held similar and other technical roles with Ithaca Energy, Marathon Oil, Texaco and PSL Energy Services.

Tim was the Health and Safety Executive’s Principal Inspector of offshore and onshore gas and pipeline facilities throughout Scotland. Until his secondment to KNOC he chaired the IOSH Offshore Group and has been an active participant in various Oil and Gas UK, IOSH and Step Change initiatives for several years.

Tim holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and an MSc in Health and Safety Management – he is a Chartered Member of IOSH; a European Occupational Safety and Health manager; and a Registered Occupational Safety and Health Registered Consultant.

Karen comes to Strategic Safety Consultants with over 20 years of experience in education and teaching. Karen’s qualifications include BA(Hons) and PGCE and she has brings a professional touch to training and course development and learning targets helping achieve outcome optimisation.

Having taught and lectured to a wide range of audiences Karen has developed an engaging communication style and can support organisations with their learning and training development needs.

Mervyn is a highly experienced and self-motivated individual with strong initiative and drive for achieving sustainable improvements in bottom-line Process and Occupational HSE performance.  He is an excellent communicator, with highly developed influencing and coaching skills.

In total Mervyn has over thirty years diverse experience within the oil and gas industry, onshore and offshore in both UK and international locations. In a twenty year offshore career he held a variety of oil industry operational roles including: OIM, HSE Supervisor and Operations Supervisor.  Onshore he has spent some eight years as an HSE Manager followed by seven years consulting on Process Safety in the oil and gas and chemical-manufacturing industries.

He holds a 1st Class Hons degree in Management Systems (OU) and this combines well with his significant experience in developing Process and Occupational Safety Management Systems and Cultures. Mervyn is also highly experienced in the application of Human and Organisational Factors in accident investigation and has a wealth of incident investigation experience as both an investigation manager and team member.

Mervyn has researched and developed an original and highly innovative Personal Safety System (the SETT system).  This is specifically designed to reduce accidents by helping the workforce improve their situational awareness.
